نیشکر
نیشکر (nishkar) means sugarcane, the tall grass cultivated for its sweet juice. The word combines نی (reed, Persian) with شکر (sugar, from Sanskrit via Middle Persian), making it a mixed-origin compound with a deep Indic root.
پنبه
پنبه (pambe) means cotton in Persian. It is a genuinely native Persian word, descended from Middle Persian pambag. Notably, Arabic borrowed its own word قطن from elsewhere rather than from Persian.
ذرت
ذرت (zorrat) means corn or maize in Persian. Borrowed from Arabic ذرة (dhurra), which originally referred to sorghum or millet. The term was later applied to New World maize when it arrived in the region.
جو
جو (jow) means barley in Persian. It is one of the oldest inherited Persian words, tracing back to Avestan and Old Iranian yava, cognate with Sanskrit yava. Barley has been cultivated in Iran for millennia.
زنبورداری
زنبورداری (zanbur-dâri) means beekeeping or apiculture in Persian. It is a compound: زنبور is an Arabic loanword for bee, and داری is a pure Persian suffix meaning the keeping or tending of something.
