What it means
معامله (mo’âmele) means deal, transaction, or business agreement. It comes from the Arabic root ع-م-ل, meaning to do or to act, and the form mo’âmele carries the sense of mutual action between two parties. In Persian it is used across contexts: a property transaction, a commercial trade, a financial settlement, or even a personal arrangement. A useful contrast is قرارداد (qarârdâd), which refers specifically to a written contract, while mo’âmele is the broader act of dealing or transacting.
How to use it
- معاملهای کردیم که هر دو راضی بودیم. (mo’âmele-i kardim ke har do râzi budim.) “We made a deal that satisfied both of us.”
- این معامله به نفعم نیست. (in mo’âmele be naf’am nist.) “This deal is not in my interest.”
- معامله خونه رو بستیم. (mo’âmele-ye khoone ro bastim.) “We closed the property deal.”
- با این قیمت معامله نمیکنم. (bâ in qeymat mo’âmele nemikonam.) “I won’t do a deal at this price.”
Cultural note
In Iranian bazaar culture, معامله is at the heart of commerce. Negotiation is expected, and a deal is often sealed with a handshake and the phrase قرار شد (qarâr shod), meaning it is agreed. The concept of چانهزنی (chânezani), bargaining, is deeply embedded in commercial life, and moamele is the outcome of that process. In formal legal contexts, معامله also appears in contracts and court documents as the term for a transaction subject to civil law.
