What it means

مس (mes) means copper, the reddish-brown metallic element. The word descends from Middle Persian mis and is a native Iranian term that predates the Islamic period. Copper is one of the oldest metals worked by humans, and the Persian word for it is correspondingly ancient. In everyday speech مس refers to the metal itself and to objects made from it: copper pots, copper wire, copper coins. A related adjective is مسی (mesi), meaning copper-colored or made of copper. The word should not be confused with مقره (moqareh) or other specialized terms for copper alloys.

How to use it

  • دیگ مسی داریم خونه. (Dig-e mesi dârim khune.) “We have a copper pot at home.”
  • مس از آهن گرون‌تره. (Mes az âhan gerun-tare.) “Copper is more expensive than iron.”
  • سقف این مسجد با مس پوشونده شده. (Saqf-e in masjed bâ mes pushunde shode.) “The roof of this mosque has been covered with copper.”
  • رنگ مویش مسیه. (Rang-e muyash mesiye.) “Her hair color is copper.”

Cultural note

Copper craftsmanship has a history of thousands of years in Iran, and certain cities are still famous for it today. Isfahan and Zanjan are known for their مس کوبی (mes-kubbi), the tradition of hand-hammering decorative patterns into copper plates and vessels. The bazaars of these cities have entire sections dedicated to copper craftsmen whose workshops ring with the sound of hammers. Copper pots called دیگ مسی (dig-e mesi) were the standard cooking vessel in Iranian homes before aluminum became common in the mid-twentieth century, and they are still prized today for their heat distribution and aesthetic quality.
