What it means

کوه آتشفشان (kuh-e âtashfeshân) means volcano, a mountain that can erupt and release lava, ash, and gases. The compound is built entirely from Persian roots: کوه (kuh) means mountain, and آتشفشان (âtashfeshân) is itself a compound of آتش (âtash, fire) and فشان (feshân, spraying or ejecting), a participle from the verb افشاندن (afshândan, to scatter or spray). The word is sometimes shortened to just آتشفشان on its own, which functions as both an adjective meaning volcanic and a noun for volcano. A related term is فوران (forân), meaning eruption.

How to use it

  • کوه آتشفشان داره فوران می‌کنه. (Kuh-e âtashfeshân dâre forân mikoneh.) “The volcano is erupting.”
  • ایران چند تا کوه آتشفشان داره. (Irân chand tâ kuh-e âtashfeshân dâre.) “Iran has several volcanoes.”
  • دمای گدازه از کوه آتشفشان خیلی بالاست. (Damâye godâze az kuh-e âtashfeshân kheyli bâlâst.) “The temperature of lava from a volcano is very high.”
  • این منطقه نزدیک یه کوه آتشفشان خاموشه. (In manteghe nazdik-e ye kuh-e âtashfeshân-e khâmusheh.) “This area is near a dormant volcano.”

Cultural note

Iran sits on active tectonic plates and has several notable volcanic formations. Mount Damavand, دماوند, is the highest peak in Iran and in the Middle East, and while it is currently considered dormant rather than extinct, it has volcanic origins and occasional fumarolic activity. Damavand holds enormous symbolic weight in Iranian mythology and poetry, appearing in the Shahnameh of Ferdowsi as the mountain where the serpent-king Zahhak was imprisoned. The Sabalan and Sahand peaks in northwestern Iran are also volcanic in origin.
