What it means

کمدی (komedi) is the Persian word for comedy as an artistic genre, covering films, theatrical plays, television series, and even stand-up performance. The word is borrowed from French “comédie,” which in turn traces back to Greek “komodia.” In everyday Persian it is used exactly as “comedy” is used in English. Its natural contrast is درام (derâm), meaning drama, and the two are frequently paired when people describe what kind of content they enjoy. The adjective form کمیک (komik) also exists, though it is less common than کمدی.

How to use it

  • امشب حال کمدی دارم. (emshab hâl-e komedi dâram.) “Tonight I’m in the mood for comedy.”
  • این سریال یه کمدی خیلی بامزه‌ست. (in seryâl ye komedi-ye kheili bâmaze-ast.) “This series is a very funny comedy.”
  • فیلم‌های کمدی ایرانی طرفدار زیادی دارن. (film-hâ-ye komedi-ye irâni tarfdâr-e ziâdi dâran.) “Iranian comedy films have a large audience.”
  • دوست دارم بریم یه نمایش کمدی ببینیم. (dust dâram berim ye namâyesh-e komedi bebinim.) “I’d like us to go see a comedy show.”

Cultural note

Comedy has a strong presence in Iranian cinema and television. The actor and comedian Akbar Abdi became one of the most beloved faces of Iranian comedy films in the 1980s and 1990s. Today online comedy content, including sketches and satirical shows, is widely consumed on platforms accessible inside Iran. The tradition of poking fun at social types goes back to classical Persian literature, though the borrowed word کمدی itself is a product of Iran’s modern engagement with Western artistic genres.
