What it means
کلاه آفتابی (kolâh âftâbi) literally means sun hat, combining کلاه (kolâh, hat) and آفتابی (âftâbi, relating to the sun, from آفتاب, âftâb, meaning sunlight). Both components are native Persian: کلاه derives from Middle Persian kulāf, and Turkish külah was in fact borrowed from Persian, not the other way around. Together the phrase covers both wide-brimmed sun hats and the brimmed baseball-style cap, which is by far the more common type worn in Iran today. You will also simply hear کلاه (kolâh) on its own when context makes the type clear.

- کلاه آفتابیت رو بذار، آفتاب داره. (Kolâh âftâbi-t ro bezâr, âftâb dâre.) “Put your sun hat on, it’s sunny.”
- یه کلاه آفتابی آبی خریدم. (Ye kolâh-e âftâbi-ye âbi kharidam.) “I bought a blue cap.”
- بدون کلاه آفتابی نرو بیرون. (Bedun-e kolâh-e âftâbi naro birun.) “Don’t go outside without a sun hat.”
- کلاه آفتابیم رو تو ماشین جا گذاشتم. (Kolâh âftâbi-m ro tu mâshin jâ gozâshtam.) “I left my cap in the car.”
Cultural note
Iran’s climate ranges from the scorching deserts of Yazd and Kerman to the humid heat of Khuzestan, making sun protection genuinely important. Baseball-style caps became popular across Iranian youth culture from the 1990s onward and are worn by both men and boys. Wide-brimmed sun hats are less common in urban settings but are practical in the countryside and at the beach on the Caspian or Persian Gulf coasts. The cap is also a common souvenir item featuring Persian calligraphy or city names.
