What it means
نشاندن (neshândan) is a native Persian causative verb built from the root of نشستن (neshastan, to sit). The causative suffix transforms it: where neshastan means to sit down yourself, neshândan means to cause someone else to sit, or to seat someone. The same logic extends to planting a tree: you place the sapling in the earth and make it stay. A close related verb is کاشتن (kâshtan, to plant seeds), though neshândan implies placing something upright rather than burying it.

- امروز یه درخت توی حیاط نشاندیم. (Emruz ye derakht tu-ye hayât neshândim.) “Today we planted a tree in the yard.”

Cultural note
Hospitality in Iranian homes places enormous weight on seating. A host who neshânds a guest correctly, meaning in the seat of honour (صدر, sadr, the spot farthest from the door), signals deep respect. Getting seating wrong is a social error that Iranians notice immediately. The word also carries a horticultural tradition: planting trees, especially in courtyards of homes and mosques, is considered a pious and generous act in Persian culture.
