What it means

کاکتوس (kaktus) is the Persian word for cactus, borrowed from French, which in turn took it from Latin cactus and Greek kaktos. The word entered Persian in the modern era as the plant became popular in Iranian homes and gardens. Cacti are not native to Iran, so the plant arrived along with its foreign name. In everyday Persian, کاکتوس refers to any spiny succulent of the Cactaceae family. There is no classical Persian synonym because the plant itself was not part of the traditional Iranian flora. The plural used in conversation is کاکتوس‌ها (kaktus-hâ).

How to use it

  • یه کاکتوس کوچیک رو پنجره دارم. (ye kaktus-e kuchik ru panjare dâram.) “I have a small cactus on the window.”
  • کاکتوس زیاد آب نمی‌خواد. (kaktus ziâd âb nemikhâd.) “Cactus doesn’t need much water.”
  • این کاکتوس گل داده. (in kaktus gol dâde.) “This cactus has bloomed.”
  • مراقب خار کاکتوس باش. (morâqeb-e khâr-e kaktus bâsh.) “Be careful of the cactus spines.”

Cultural note

Cacti became popular as indoor plants in Iranian homes from the mid-twentieth century onward, especially in apartment settings where space and watering time are limited. Their reputation for surviving neglect made them a practical choice. In recent years, small decorative cacti have become a staple of Iranian home decor shared widely on social media. The plant carries a light humorous association too: Iranians sometimes joke that someone with a difficult personality is like a کاکتوس, prickly on the outside.
