What it means
حوله (howle) means “towel,” the absorbent cloth you use to dry yourself after a bath or shower, or to dry your hands and face. It is the standard term in any home, covering everything from a small hand towel to a large bath sheet. You will hear it qualified by what it is for, as in حوله حمام (bath towel) or حوله دست (hand towel). It is not to be confused with دستمال (dastmâl), which is a smaller cloth or napkin for wiping surfaces or hands at the table.
How to use it
- حوله رو بده من (howle ro bede man) “pass me the towel”
- با حوله خشک شو (bâ howle khoshk sho) “dry yourself with the towel”
- حوله ها رو شستم (howle-hâ ro shostam) “I washed the towels”
- یه حوله تمیز بردار (ye howle-ye tamiz bardâr) “grab a clean towel”
Cultural note
In many Iranian homes, families keep a stack of fresh towels ready for guests, since hospitality matters and a visitor may want to wash up. Towels are commonly hung to dry on a rail or radiator rather than tumble dried. A new set of حوله is a practical and popular gift, especially as part of a bride’s جهیزیه (the household goods she brings to a marriage).
