What it means
فر (fer) means oven, the enclosed box appliance used for baking bread, roasting meat, and cooking dishes that need sustained dry heat. The word is a direct borrowing from French “four” (oven), reshaped to fit Persian sound patterns. It is distinct from اجاق گاز (ojâq-e gâz), which is the burner-top cooktop: فر is specifically the enclosed chamber below or beside the burners. In older or more formal Persian you may encounter تنور (tanur), a clay oven, but فر is the standard modern word for a household or bakery oven.

Cultural note
Baking in a home oven became common in Iranian kitchens as modern apartments replaced courtyard houses from the mid-twentieth century onward. Traditional Iranian baking had relied on the تنور (tanur), a communal clay oven, and specialist bakeries still use large deck ovens for sangak and barbari flatbreads. The home فر is now associated with cakes, cookies, and roasted dishes influenced by European and American cooking, a sign of how urban Iranian food culture absorbed French and then American culinary ideas across the twentieth century.
