What it means

اکوسیستم (ekosistem) came into Persian from English “ecosystem,” which itself combines the Greek oikos (house, habitat) and systema (system). It refers to a system of living organisms, including plants, animals, and microbes, interacting with each other and with their non-living environment, whether that is a forest, a coral reef, a desert, or even a city. There is no competing native Persian term in common use; اکوسیستم is the standard word in biology education, environmental journalism, and policy discussion. In informal tech contexts, Iranians also borrow the business sense of “ecosystem” directly: اکوسیستم استارت‌آپی (ekosistem-e startâpi, startup ecosystem).

How to use it

(Ekosistem-e jangal be ta’âdol-e zarifi bastegi dârad.) “The forest ecosystem depends on a delicate balance.”
(Âludegi-ye rudkhâne koll-e ekosistem râ âsib mi-zanad.) “River pollution damages the entire ecosystem.”
(Ekosistem-hâ-ye daryâyi dar hâl-e taghyir-e sari’ hastand.) “Marine ecosystems are changing rapidly.”
(Irân dârây-e ekosistem-hâ-ye motanave’i az kuhestân tâ biâbân ast.) “Iran has diverse ecosystems ranging from mountains to deserts.”

Cultural note

Iran’s geography spans an unusually wide range of ecosystems for a single country, from the Caspian forests in the north to the Dasht-e Kavir salt desert in the center and the Persian Gulf mangroves in the south. This diversity has given Iranian environmentalists and researchers a rich set of case studies, and اکوسیستم appears frequently in the work of organizations like Iran’s Department of Environment (سازمان حفاظت محیط زیست). The word has also migrated into business Persian, where commentators speak of اکوسیستم دیجیتال (ekosistem-e dijitâl, digital ecosystem) when discussing tech hubs like Tehran’s startup scene.
