What it means
دروازهبان (darvâzeh-bân) is the goalkeeper, the player who guards the goal. The word is a clean compound: دروازه (darvâzeh, gate, large door) plus بان (bân, keeper, guard). Persian uses بان productively as a suffix for guardians of all kinds: باغبان (bâghbân, gardener, garden-keeper), نگهبان (negahbân, watchman), پاسبان (pâsbân, policeman, the older word still in casual use), دیدهبان (didebân, lookout). The same suffix in دروازهبان gives you the player whose job is to defend the gate.
The compound, broken down
- دروازه (darvâzeh): gate. Originally a city gate, a large entry point. The word still appears in Tehran place-names like Darvâzeh Dolat and Darvâzeh Shemiran, where the old Qajar-era city walls had gates. In football, the same word names the goal frame itself.
- بان (bân): keeper, guardian. From Middle Persian pân, related to Avestan pā- (to protect). Today it is one of Persian’s most productive suffixes for agent nouns of guardianship.
Used together since the early twentieth century, when football vocabulary entered Persian alongside the sport itself. The neologism stuck because the parts felt native; there is nothing borrowed here. Some early Persian newspapers tried the English loan گُلکیپر (gol-kiper); it lost. Pure Persian compounds win when they sound right.

The historical figures
Iranian football has a small tradition of producing serious goalkeepers. Nâser Hejâzi (1949 to 2011) is the towering historical figure, captain of Esteghlal and the national team, voted Asia’s goalkeeper of the twentieth century by the IFFHS. Ahmadrezâ Abedzâdeh anchored the 1998 World Cup squad and the famous Iran-USA match. Alireza Beiranvand carried the role into the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, including a famous penalty save against Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in Saint Petersburg.
In context
The word darvâzeh-bân lands hardest in the moment commentators repeat it as a ball flies toward the net. Iranian sports radio uses a fixed cluster of phrases around the goalkeeper: مهار کرد (mahâr kard, he saved it), دفع کرد (daf kard, he punched it away), گل خورد (gol khord, he conceded). The position carries weight in Iranian football culture; goalkeepers who do well become household names for a generation.
