What it means
دف (daf) is the large Persian frame drum. A wooden ring 50 centimeters across, a single goatskin head, and small metal rings fixed inside that jingle when the drum is struck or shaken.

How it sounds and when you’ll hear it
Deep boom on the center, sharp slap on the rim, constant shimmer from the inner rings. The combination is hypnotic by design. You hear it in Sufi sama ceremonies in Kurdistan, in Bijan Kamkar’s recordings, and increasingly in Tehran fusion ensembles that blend classical Persian with rock or jazz.
Cultural note
The daf is sacred in Kurdish Sufi orders, where dervishes play it for hours during sama, the spinning meditation ceremony. It crossed into mainstream Persian classical music in the 1990s and is now standard in any large ensemble. A good daf is hand-built and treated as a serious instrument, not folk decoration.
