The daf is sacred in Kurdish Sufi orders, where dervishes play it for hours during sama, the spinning meditation ceremony. It crossed into mainstream Persian classical music in the 1990s and is now standard in any large ensemble. A good daf is hand-built and treated as a serious instrument, not folk decoration.
