Conjugation
Present stem: برخیز (barkhiz). Past stem: برخاست (barkhâst). Sample forms, present 1sg: برمیخیزم (bar-mikhizam, “I rise”); simple past 1sg: برخاستم (barkhâstam, “I rose”); imperative: برخیز (barkhiz, “rise!”). The verb prefix بر (bar, “up, upon”) plus the verb خاستن (khâstan, “to rise”) creates the directional sense. The famous Persian poetic line برخیزید! (barkhizid!, “rise!”) echoes this verb in revolutionary anthems.
