What it means
برداشت (bardâsht) means withdrawal, the act of taking money out of a bank account or from a fund. The word is built entirely from native Persian roots: بر (bar), a prefix meaning up or away, and داشت (dâsht), the past stem of داشتن (dâshtan), meaning to hold or to take. The compound literally captures the idea of taking something up or away, which is exactly what a cash withdrawal does. In everyday speech you will also hear پول برداشتن (pul bardâshtan, to withdraw money) as the full verb form. The opposite is واریز (vâriz), a deposit. برداشت is also used outside banking to mean interpretation, as in my reading or understanding of something, which is the same conceptual root: taking meaning from something.

- از دستگاه برداشت کردم. (Az dastgâh bardâsht kardam.) “I withdrew from the ATM.”
- برداشت روزانهام محدودیت داره. (Bardâsht-e ruzâne-am mahdudiyyat dâre.) “My daily withdrawal has a limit.”
- میخوام پانصد تومن برداشت کنم. (Mikhâm pânsad tuman bardâsht konam.) “I want to withdraw five hundred tomans.”
- برداشت از حسابم انجام نشد. (Bardâsht az hesâbam anjâm nashod.) “The withdrawal from my account did not go through.”
Cultural note
ATMs in Iran are called دستگاه خودپرداز (dastgâh-e khodpardâz) or simply دستگاه (dastgâh). Cash remains important in daily Iranian life despite the growth of electronic payments. Daily withdrawal limits set by the Central Bank of Iran are a common friction point: many ATMs cap per-transaction withdrawals at relatively small amounts, meaning multiple trips to the machine are sometimes needed. This limit, called سقف برداشت (saqf-e bardâsht), is a phrase Iranians know all too well.
