What it means

بارکش (bâr-kesh) is a compound noun meaning a freight truck, lorry, or any vehicle designed to carry heavy loads. It is formed from بار (bâr, “load” or “cargo”) and کش (kesh, an agent suffix derived from کشیدن, “to pull” or “to haul”), both of pure Persian origin. The literal meaning is “load-puller” or “cargo hauler.” In practice it refers to large goods vehicles on roads and highways. A close synonym is کامیون (kâmion), a loanword from French “camion,” but بارکش is the native Persian alternative and is preferred in formal and written registers.

How to use it

  • بارکش‌ها باید از مسیر ویژه برن. (bâr-keshâ bâyad az masir-e vijeh baran.) “Freight trucks must take the designated route.”
  • یه بارکش وسط اتوبان خراب شده بود. (ye bâr-kesh vasat-e otobân kharâb shode bud.) “A freight truck had broken down in the middle of the highway.”
  • کرایه بارکش چقده؟ (kerâye-ye bâr-kesh cheghadeh?) “How much is the freight truck hire?”
  • اثاثیه رو با بارکش فرستادیم. (asâsiyeh ro bâ bâr-kesh frestâdim.) “We sent the furniture by freight truck.”

Cultural note

Iran’s road freight network is enormous, carrying the bulk of goods between cities because the rail network, though expanding, does not reach many regions. بارکش vehicles, often long-haul diesel trucks, are a constant presence on intercity highways. Owner-operators who drive their own بارکش are a distinct social and economic group, and depictions of their long, solitary journeys appear frequently in Iranian cinema and literature.
