What it means

آواز (avaz) means “song” or “singing” in everyday Persian, but in the classical world the word has a specialized sense: free-meter, improvised vocal performance of poetry inside a dastgah. Unlike a تصنیف (tasnif), which has set lyrics and a fixed melody, an avaz is created in the moment. The singer chooses a ghazal by Hafez or Saadi, picks a dastgah, and improvises a vocal line that follows the poem’s emotional contour.

Avaz is the most prestigious form of singing in Iranian classical music. It is what Mohammad-Reza Shajarian did for sixty years.

How it works

An avaz performance has no fixed meter. The singer holds long, sustained tones, ornaments them with the small vibrato called تحریر (tahrir), and pauses on emotionally weighted syllables. An instrumental backing, usually a tar, setar, or ney, follows the singer rather than leading. The whole piece can last fifteen to thirty minutes on a single ghazal, with the singer moving from gushe to gushe inside the chosen dastgah.

تحریر (tahrir), the rapid throat-trilled ornament unique to Iranian classical singing, is the technical core of avaz. Mastering it is the difference between an enthusiastic amateur and a serious vocalist. Shajarian’s tahrir on the 1975 آستان جانان recordings is the benchmark most younger singers still measure themselves against.

Cultural weight

محمدرضا شجریان (mohammad-reza shajarian, 1940 to 2020) defined Persian classical avaz for the second half of the twentieth century. His 1979 broadcast of the prayer ربنا (rabbana) during Ramadan, an avaz in dastgah Sehgah, became so culturally embedded that Iranian state radio replays it every Ramadan even now, decades later. Other major avaz-khan-an (avaz singers) include Banan, Adib Khansari, Eqbal Azar, and from the younger generation Homayun Shajarian and Salar Aghili.

Avaz remains a marker of cultural literacy. Iranians who do not follow classical music often still recognize Shajarian’s voice within three seconds. The form survived state interference, the 1979 revolution, the suppression of solo female voices on state media, and the rise of pop. It is one of the rare Iranian art forms that holds its prestige across political generations.
