Iranian firefighters hold strong public sympathy, partly cemented by the 2017 Plasco Building disaster in Tehran. The Plasco was a 17-story commercial tower in the city center, built in the 1960s as one of Tehran's first modern high-rises. On the morning of January 19, 2017, it caught fire. As firefighters worked inside trying to evacuate the upper floors, the building collapsed in a cloud of dust live on national television. Sixteen firefighters died, alongside several civilians and shopkeepers.
