What it means
اسب (asb) means “horse.” Pure Persian. The plural is اسبها (asb-hâ). The word reaches back through Old Persian (aspa) and shares roots with Sanskrit ashva and Avestan aspa, all from a common Indo-Iranian ancestor.
The compound forms multiply quickly: اسبسواری (asb-savâri, “horseback riding”), اسبدوانی (asb-davâni, “horse racing”), اسب نر (asb-e nar, “male horse, stallion”), اسب ماده (asb-e mâde, “mare”).
How to use it
- یک اسب سفید (yek asb-e sefid) “a white horse”
- اسب چوبی (asb-e chubi) “wooden horse, hobby horse” (also the Trojan horse)
- سوار اسب شدن (savâr-e asb shodan) “to mount a horse”
- نعل اسب (na’l-e asb) “horseshoe”
- اصطبل اسب (establ-e asb) “horse stable”
The Caspian horse and Iranian breeds
Iran is home to one of the oldest known horse breeds in the world: the Caspian horse (اسب کاسپین, asb-e kâspin), a small horse rediscovered in the 1960s on the southern shores of the Caspian Sea. DNA work and archaeological evidence suggest the breed has lived continuously in the region for at least two and a half millennia, possibly more, making it a candidate for the oldest extant horse breed.
Iran also produces the Turkmen horse and the Persian Arab, both important in the region’s racing and riding traditions. Horse racing (اسبدوانی) is a real subculture in the Turkmen Sahara region of northeastern Iran.
The horse in Persian literature
The most famous horse in Persian literature is رخش (Rakhsh), the warhorse of Rostam, the legendary hero of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh. Rakhsh is not just a vehicle. He is a character. He sees danger before Rostam does, fights lions and dragons alongside him, and mourns his rider.
The Shahnameh treats horses as full participants in heroism. Rakhsh is described physically (rose-colored coat with markings like saffron petals), psychologically (loyal, brave, sometimes stubborn), and morally (he refuses to harm those who pose no threat). This kind of literary attention to a horse is unusual in epic literature and helps explain why اسب carries cultural weight in Persian beyond the bare biological meaning.
