What it means

آپارتمان (âpârtemân) means an apartment or flat, that is, a self-contained residential unit within a larger building. The word is borrowed directly from French appartement, which entered Persian in the twentieth century as apartment-style urban housing spread across Iranian cities. Before this style of housing became common, most urban Iranians lived in خانه (khâne), a detached or courtyard house. Today آپارتمان is the default word for any unit in a multi-story block, and phrases like آپارتمان اجاره‌ای (âpârtemân-e ejâre’i, rental apartment) fill classified listings throughout the country.

How to use it

  • آپارتمان ما طبقه سومه. (âpârtemân-e mâ tabaqe-ye sevvome.) “Our apartment is on the third floor.”
  • دنبال آپارتمان دوخوابه می‌گردم. (donbâl-e âpârtemân-e do-khâbe migardam.) “I am looking for a two-bedroom apartment.”
  • آپارتمانش نزدیک مترو هست. (âpârtemânesh nazdik-e metro hast.) “His apartment is near the metro.”
  • اجاره آپارتمان تهران خیلی گرونه. (ejâre-ye âpârtemân-e Tehrân kheyli gerune.) “Apartment rent in Tehran is very expensive.”

Cultural note

The shift from courtyard houses to multi-story apartment blocks reshaped Iranian social life in the latter half of the twentieth century, particularly after rapid urban migration accelerated in the 1960s and 1970s. Today the vast majority of Tehran’s population lives in آپارتمان, and the word has become so embedded that most speakers do not think of it as foreign. The housing market, rental prices, and apartment etiquette, including noise rules, shared stairwells, and the role of the سرایدار (sarâydâr, building caretaker), are constant topics of everyday conversation in Iranian cities.
