What it means

رخت‌آویز (rakht-âviz) means “clothes hanger,” “coat hook,” or “coat rack,” anything you hang clothes on. It is a pure Persian compound: رخت (rakht) is an older word for clothing or garments, and آویز (âviz) comes from آویختن (âvikhtan), “to hang.” So the word literally describes a thing that holds hanging clothes. The same word covers both the standing coat rack near the door and the small wall hooks inside a closet. The thin shoulder-shaped hanger you slide a shirt onto is more often called چوب‌لباسی (chub-lebâsi), a useful contrast to keep in mind.

How to use it

  • کتت رو بنداز رو رخت‌آویز (kot-et ro bendâz ru rakht-âviz) “throw your coat on the coat rack”
  • رخت‌آویز پشت در اتاقه (rakht-âviz posht-e dar-e otâqe) “the coat hook is behind the door of the room”
  • یه رخت‌آویز تازه برای راهرو خریدیم (ye rakht-âviz-e tâze barâye râhru kharidim) “we bought a new coat rack for the hallway”
  • حوله رو آویزون کن به رخت‌آویز (howle ro âvizun kon be rakht-âviz) “hang the towel on the hook”

Cultural note

In many Iranian homes a رخت‌آویز stands just inside the entryway, where guests leave their coats before sitting down. Since shoes come off at the door, this spot near the entrance becomes a small hub for outerwear and bags. In bathrooms and beside the kitchen, a simple wall رخت‌آویز holds towels and aprons within easy reach.
