What it means
سوار شدن (savâr shodan) means to get on or to board a vehicle, whether that is a bus, train, taxi, bicycle, horse, or elevator. It is a compound verb built from سوار (savâr), an adjective and noun of pure Persian origin meaning «mounted» or «rider» (from Middle Persian asavâr), and the light verb شدن (shodan), meaning «to become.» The resulting meaning is literally «to become mounted,» which in practice covers all contexts of boarding or getting into any conveyance. The opposite verb is پیاده شدن (piyâde shodan), meaning to get off or disembark.
How to use it
- سوار اتوبوس شدم. (Savâr-e otobus shodam.) “I got on the bus.”
- کِی سوار قطار میشیم؟ (Key savâr-e ghatar mishim?) “When do we board the train?”
- سوار ماشین من بشو. (Savâr-e mâshin-e man besho.) “Get in my car.”
- اونا سوار اسب شدن. (Unâ savâr-e asb shodan.) “They got on the horses.”
Cultural note
سوار شدن has been part of Persian since the era when horses were the primary mode of transport, and the underlying root سوار appears in classical poetry. Today the verb covers everything from getting on Tehran metro at rush hour to boarding a domestic flight. In spoken Persian, the ezafe construction سوار + اتوبوس شدن is the standard pattern used in all four examples above. Drivers and conductors on intercity buses often shout سوار شید! (savâr shid!), meaning «all aboard!» or «get on!», to hurry passengers.
