What it means
بوس کردن (bus kardan) means to kiss or to give a kiss. The noun بوس (bus, also spelled bos) is a native Persian word with a long classical heritage, appearing throughout classical Persian poetry, which confirms it is not a modern borrowing. کردن (kardan, to do) is the standard Persian light-action verb used to form compound verbs. The register is colloquial and affectionate, used freely between family members, romantic partners, and close friends. A more formal or literary variant is بوسه دادن (buse dadan, to give a kiss), where بوسه (buse) is the slightly more elevated noun form of the same root.

- مامانم گونهمو بوس کرد. (Mamanam gune-mo bus kard.) “My mom kissed my cheek.”
- بوسش کرد و خداحافظی کرد. (Busash kard o khodahafezi kard.) “He kissed her and said goodbye.”
- بچهها دوست دارن بوس بگیرن. (Bache-ha dust daran bus begiran.) “Kids love to receive kisses.”
- دستشو بوس کرد از احترام. (Dastasho bus kard az ehteram.) “She kissed his hand out of respect.”
Cultural note
Kissing in Iranian culture carries strong social and familial meaning. Greeting kisses on the cheek between family members or close same-gender friends are common and expected. Kissing the hand of an elder or a revered religious figure, as in the last example above, is a traditional sign of deep respect called دست بوسی (dast-busi, hand-kissing). Public kissing between romantic partners is not socially accepted in Iran. The word بوس also lives on in the endearment phrase بوس و کنار (bus o kenar), meaning kisses and embraces, used in affectionate speech about loved ones.
