What it means
عصر بخیر (asr be-kheyr) is the standard Persian greeting for the afternoon hours, roughly from midday until sunset. The phrase has two parts: عصر (asr) meaning afternoon, borrowed from Arabic عَصْر, and بخیر (be-kheyr) meaning in goodness or well, from the Arabic-rooted word خیر (kheyr, goodness) combined with the Persian preposition به (be). Together they form a set phrase meaning “may your afternoon be in goodness,” parallel to صبح بخیر (sobh be-kheyr, good morning) and شب بخیر (shab be-kheyr, good night). The phrase is considered mixed-origin because عصر and خیر come from Arabic while the preposition به is native Persian.
