What it means
اغلب (aghlab) means “often,” “mostly,” or “for the most part.” It comes from Arabic, where it is derived from the root غ-ل-ب (gh-l-b), meaning to prevail or overcome. The form اغلب in Arabic is the elative of غالب (ghâleb, dominant/prevailing), so its core sense is “that which prevails,” which gives Persian the meaning “in most cases” or “usually.” In formal Persian writing, journalism, and official speech, اغلب is the standard word for frequency and predominance. In spoken everyday Persian, the same idea is expressed with معمولاً (ma’mulan, usually), زیاد (ziâd, a lot/often), or بیشتر وقتها (bishtar vaqt-hâ, most of the time). Like اکثر, the word اغلب signals a formal or literary register the moment it appears in conversation.

اغلب appears frequently in classical Persian poetry and prose, where Arabic-origin vocabulary was a mark of learning and sophistication rather than mere borrowing. Authors like Saadi and Rumi use the register freely because in the medieval period the boundary between Arabic and Persian educated vocabulary was deliberately porous. In modern Iran, اغلب survives primarily in print: national newspapers, academic papers, and formal speeches use it. In diaspora Persian communities, where formal written Persian is encountered less daily, اغلب can sound slightly archaic, and speakers may replace it with the more colloquial معمولاً even in writing. Learners reading Iranian newspaper editorials or Shahnameh translations will encounter اغلب as a core frequency adverb alongside همواره (hamvâre, always) and گاه (gâh, sometimes).
