What it means
وایتکس (vâyteks) means bleach, the liquid cleaning agent used to disinfect and whiten fabrics and hard surfaces. The word is borrowed from an English-derived brand name that became so common in Iran it turned into the generic term for all liquid bleach, much the way Kleenex is used for all paper tissues in English. The proper technical term is سفیدکننده (sefid-konande), meaning whitener or bleaching agent, but almost nobody uses that word in everyday speech.
How to use it
- کمی وایتکس به آب اضافه کن تا کف حمام رو ضدعفونی کنی. (kami vâyteks be âb ezâfe kon tâ kaf-e hammâm ro zed-‘ofuni koni.) “Add a little bleach to the water to disinfect the bathroom floor.”
- لباس سفیدام با وایتکس تمیز میشه. (lebâs sefidâm bâ vâyteks tamiz mishe.) “My white clothes get clean with bleach.”
- بوی وایتکس خیلی تند و زنندهست. (buy-e vâyteks kheyli tond o zanande-st.) “The smell of bleach is really sharp and harsh.”
- دستکش بپوش وقتی داری با وایتکس کار میکنی. (dastkesh bepush vaghti dâri bâ vâyteks kâr mikoni.) “Put on gloves when you are working with bleach.”
Cultural note
In Iranian households, وایتکس is one of the most recognized cleaning brand names. The product became widely available from the mid-twentieth century and the brand name quickly replaced any generic description. Iranians typically dilute it with water before use and are generally aware of its strength. Ventilation warnings are standard advice passed down within families rather than read off a label.
