What it means
طیف (teyf) is borrowed from Arabic طيف, which originally meant a specter or apparition, then came to mean the spread of colors produced when light is broken apart. In Persian today it covers both the scientific sense, the visible spectrum or the electromagnetic spectrum, and the figurative sense, a broad range or spectrum of views, parties, or attitudes. A close related word is رنگینکمان (rangin-kamân), meaning rainbow, but طیف is the precise technical and political term when you want to say “across the spectrum.”
How to use it
- طیف نور خورشید از قرمز تا بنفش است. (Teyf-e nur-e khorshid az ghermez tâ banafsh ast.) “The spectrum of sunlight runs from red to violet.”
- احزاب سیاسی در طیف وسیعی از ایدهها قرار دارند. (Ahzâb-e siyâsi dar teyf-e vasi’i az ide-hâ qarâr dârand.) “Political parties sit across a wide spectrum of ideas.”
- این مسئله طیف گستردهای از نظرات را در بر میگیرد. (In mas’ale teyf-e gostarde-i az nazarât râ dar bar mi-girad.) “This issue encompasses a broad spectrum of opinions.”
- دانشمندان طیف امواج رادیویی را تحلیل کردند. (Dâneshmandân teyf-e amvâj-e râdyoyi râ tahlil kardand.) “Scientists analyzed the radio-wave spectrum.”
Cultural note
In Iranian political journalism طیف has become almost unavoidable. Commentators routinely speak of طیف اصلاحطلب (teyf-e eslâh-talab, reformist spectrum) or طیف محافظهکار (teyf-e mohâfeze-kâr, conservative spectrum) when mapping the space between political tendencies. The word travels comfortably between the physics classroom and the newspaper editorial, which is part of why educated Farsi speakers reach for it so naturally in both contexts.
