What it means
تا اینکه (tâ inke) means “until” or “up to the point that,” connecting a main clause to the moment or event that ends or shifts it. Both تا and اینکه are native Persian words, making this a pure-Persian compound conjunction. The bare form تا (tâ) on its own can mean “until,” “so that,” or “up to,” so اینکه is added for clarity to signal the temporal or conditional meaning precisely. A contrast worth noting: تا can mean “until” (temporal) or “so that” (purposive), but تا اینکه leans strongly toward the temporal or result reading.

- منتظر موندم تا اینکه برگشت. (Montazer mundam tâ inke bargasht.) “I waited until he came back.”

Cultural note
تا is one of the oldest and most versatile particles in Persian, with roots traceable to Old Iranian and Avestan. In classical Persian literature, تا alone carries the sense of “until” in verse, but modern prose and speech prefer تا اینکه for the temporal “until” reading to avoid ambiguity with the purposive تا (meaning “so that”). The distinction matters at B1 level because learners often confuse the two functions of bare تا. In Tajik Persian, a similar expansion with an added complementizer appears in spoken language for the same clarifying purpose.
