What it means
شادمان (shâdmân) means cheerful, delighted, or deeply glad. It is a pure Persian word formed from شاد (shâd, joyful) and the intensifying suffix ـمان, which adds a sense of fullness or completeness to the state. This makes شادمان slightly stronger and more formal than شاد on its own. You will encounter it often in literary prose, poetry, and formal speech, while everyday conversation more often uses شاد or خوشحال (khoshhâl). The abstract noun form, شادمانی (shâdmâni), means joy or jubilation.
How to use it
- از دیدنت شادمان شدم. (az didanat shâdmân shodam.) “Seeing you made me delighted.”
- دلم شادمان است. (delam shâdmân ast.) “My heart is full of joy.”
- مردم شادمان به خیابانها آمدند. (mardom shâdmân be khiyâbânhâ âmadand.) “People came to the streets in jubilation.”
- شادمان باشید. (shâdmân bâshid.) “May you be joyful.”
Cultural note
شادمان belongs to the register of classical and modern literary Persian. You find it in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh and in the work of 20th-century writers who deliberately reach for pure Persian vocabulary. In contemporary usage it appears in formal toasts, official addresses, and lyrical pop song lyrics where a slightly elevated tone is desired. Using شادمان in casual speech is not wrong, but it signals a poetic or educated register that شاد alone does not carry.
