What it means
پایان سال (pâyân-e sâl) literally means “the end of the year.” Both components are native Persian words: پایان (pâyân) means “end” or “conclusion,” and سال (sâl) means “year.” They are joined by the ezâfe particle, giving the compound a possessive feel: “the year’s end.” A close synonym is آخر سال (âkhar-e sâl), where آخر is the Arabic word for “last” or “end” and carries the same everyday meaning. پایان سال is the more formal, stylistically Persian-leaning option of the two.

- پایان سال نزدیک شده. (pâyân-e sâl nazdik shode.) “The end of the year is near.”
- خانهتکانی پایان سال خیلی کار داره. (khâne-tekâni-ye pâyân-e sâl kheyli kâr dâre.) “The year-end house-cleaning takes a lot of work.”
- تو پایان سال همه شلوغن. (to pâyân-e sâl hame sholoqan.) “At year-end everyone is busy.”
- هدیههای پایان سال رو آماده کردی؟ (hadye-hâye pâyân-e sâl ro âmâde kardi?) “Have you prepared the year-end gifts?”
Cultural note
In Iran the solar Hijri calendar is used for official and everyday purposes, so پایان سال falls at the end of Esfand (اسفند), the twelfth month, which corresponds to late February or early March. The final weeks before Nowruz are marked by خانهتکانی (khâne-tekâni), a thorough top-to-bottom house cleaning, as well as settling outstanding debts and buying new clothes. The festival of چهارشنبهسوری (Cheharshanbe Suri), held on the last Wednesday night before Nowruz, is one of the most energetic پایان سال traditions, with people jumping over bonfires to welcome the new year.
