What it means
کشتیگیر (koshtigir) means a wrestler, a person who practises or competes in wrestling. The word is a native Persian compound: کشتی (koshti, wrestling) joined with the agentive suffix گیر (gir, one who grips or takes hold, from the verb گرفتن, gereftan, to take or to seize). The compound is transparent and productive, the same گیر suffix appears in words like دزدگیر (dozdgir, burglar alarm, literally thief-catcher) and آتشگیر (atashgir, flammable, literally fire-catcher). In context کشتیگیر refers to wrestlers in both modern Olympic wrestling and in traditional Persian wrestling styles.

Cultural note
Wrestling is one of Iran’s most celebrated and successful Olympic sports. Iranian کشتیگیرها have won numerous Olympic and World Championship medals in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, and wrestlers are among the most admired athletes in the country. Beyond Olympic competition, a traditional form called کشتی پهلوانی (koshti-ye pahlavani), associated with the Zurkhaneh (house of strength) martial tradition, has deep roots in Persian culture and is considered part of Iran’s intangible cultural heritage. The title پهلوان (pahlavan), meaning a great warrior or strongman, is historically given to the most respected کشتیگیرها.
