What it means
کنفرانس (konferâns) is a direct borrowing from French conférence, which comes from Latin conferentia, meaning a bringing together for discussion. It arrived in Persian through academic and diplomatic contact in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In Persian usage today, کنفرانس has two related but distinct senses: a large formal gathering such as an international conference (کنفرانس بینالمللی, konferâns-e beyn-al-mellali) and a single formal presentation or lecture delivered by one speaker, which is its most common meaning in university settings. A student asked to prepare a کنفرانس is being asked to present a topic formally in front of the class. The word کنگره (kongre, also European-origin) overlaps for very large political or legislative conferences but is not interchangeable in the academic sense.

Cultural note
Iranian universities use کنفرانس to describe both major research conferences and routine student presentations assigned as coursework, which can surprise learners who expect the word to refer only to large events. In professional life, attending or presenting at an international کنفرانس is considered a significant credential in an academic’s record of achievements. Iran has hosted and attended numerous multilateral کنفرانسها (konferâns-hâ) despite periods of international isolation, particularly in fields such as chemistry, engineering, and Islamic studies.
