What it means
خودکار (khod-kâr) means a ballpoint pen. The word is a pure Persian compound: خود (khod) means “self” and کار (kâr) means “work” or “doing,” so literally “self-working” or “automatic.” The compound originally described anything automatic or self-operating, and Iranians settled on it as the name for the ballpoint pen because it writes without the dipping and blotting that quill and dip pens required. A close synonym in colloquial Tehran speech is قلم (ghalam), though strictly speaking ghalam refers to a pen in the broader or more classical sense. In formal or literary contexts you may see ghalam used for خودکار, but in everyday life khod-kâr is the standard, neutral word for the object you find in your shirt pocket.
