What it means
جغرافیا (joghrâfiyâ) means “geography,” both the academic discipline that studies the earth’s physical features and human populations, and the general geographical character of a place. The word entered Persian through Arabic “jughrâfiyâ,” which was itself a borrowing from Greek “geographia” (geo, earth, and graphia, writing or description). In school contexts it is a core subject alongside تاریخ (târikh, history). A compound form, جغرافیای طبیعی (joghrâfiyâ-ye tabi’i), means physical geography, while جغرافیای انسانی (joghrâfiyâ-ye ensâni) means human geography.
How to use it
- جغرافیا درس مورد علاقهمه. (Joghrâfiyâ dars-e mowred-e alâqam-e.) “Geography is my favourite subject.”
- تو امتحان جغرافیا خوب کردم. (Tu emtehân-e joghrâfiyâ khub kardam.) “I did well in the geography exam.”
- جغرافیای ایران خیلی متنوعه. (Joghrâfiyâ-ye irân kheyli motanave’e.) “Iran’s geography is very diverse.”
- برای سفر باید جغرافیای منطقه رو بدونی. (Barâ-ye safar bâyad joghrâfiyâ-ye mantaqe ro beduni.) “For travel you need to know the geography of the region.”
Cultural note
Geography is a compulsory subject at all levels of Iranian schooling, with particular emphasis on Iran’s varied landscape: the Alborz and Zagros mountain ranges, the Dasht-e Kavir and Dasht-e Lut deserts, the Caspian coast in the north, and the Persian Gulf shoreline in the south. Iran’s remarkable geographic diversity, from lush forest to high alpine to hot desert within relatively short distances, makes the subject feel concrete to students. University programs in geography are well established in Iran.
