What it means
جرمگیری (jerm-giri) means dental scaling, the professional removal of tartar and calculus from the teeth. The word is a compound: جرم (jerm) comes from Arabic, where it means a solid mass or deposit, and گیری (giri) is a Persian suffix derived from گرفتن (gereftan, to take or remove). Together they mean removal of deposits. In clinical Persian you will also hear جرمگیری دندان (jerm-giri-ye dandân) for added clarity, and the procedure is sometimes called تمیز کردن دندان (tamiz kardan-e dandân, teeth cleaning) in informal conversation. جرم (jerm) on its own in a dental context refers specifically to tartar or calculus buildup, not to a germ or microbe, which is میکروب (mikrob).

- جرمگیری دردی نداره ولی یکم حساسیت ایجاد میکنه. (jerm-giri dardi nadâre vali yekam hassâsiyat ijâd mikone.) “Scaling is not painful but it causes a bit of sensitivity.”
Cultural note
Dental hygienists and general dentists in Iran both perform scaling, and the procedure is widely recommended at six-month intervals. Many Iranians associate جرمگیری with whitening as well as health, and private clinics often market it alongside bleaching packages. Access varies by region, with urban centers having far more equipped facilities than rural areas. The Arabic root جرم also appears in legal and moral Persian vocabulary, meaning crime or offense, so context always determines meaning.
