What it means
جفنگ (jafang) means nonsense, drivel, or rubbish, applied to speech or writing that is absurd or completely without merit. Its exact etymology is disputed: it does not have a clear Arabic or Persian classical root, and Dehkhoda does not provide a definitive derivation. The origin is best described as unknown. In use it functions as both a noun and an adjective: حرف جفنگ (harf-e jafang, “nonsense talk”) and simply جفنگ (“that’s nonsense”). A close synonym is مزخرف (mozakhraf), which is Arabic in origin and slightly more formal; جفنگ is punchier and more colloquial.

Cultural note
جفنگ is widely used across generations in Iran as a quick, dismissive label for bad arguments, tabloid stories, or shallow conversation. Unlike مزخرف, which can sound slightly bookish, جفنگ feels immediate and spoken. Because its origin is not clearly established, it is a good example of a colloquial word that has been part of everyday Persian for a long time without a traceable classical pedigree.
