What it means
جا خوردن (jâ khordan) is a colloquial idiom meaning to be taken aback, to be startled, to be caught off guard. Both components are pure Persian: جا (jâ) means place or spot, and خوردن (khordan) here carries the sense of being hit or struck (a secondary meaning it shares in several compound verbs). The literal picture is something like “getting hit in your place,” which captures the frozen-in-your-tracks quality of genuine surprise. A close synonym is تعجب کردن (ta’ajob kardan), though that is more neutral and less physical. جا خوردن implies a jolt, not just mild surprise.
