What it means
جاکلیدی (jâ-kelidi) refers to any key holder or keychain, whether the wall-mounted rack by the entrance or the ring you carry in your pocket. The word is a compound: جا (jâ) is a native Persian word meaning “place” or “holder,” while کلید (kelid) is a Persian word of Iranian origin, though some etymologists have suggested a connection to Greek kleis, meaning key; that link is not the consensus view and should be treated with caution. A close related word is جاسوئیچی (jâ-suiichi), which specifically means a car-key fob, where suiichi itself comes from the English word “switch.”

Cultural note
In Iranian homes it is standard to find a small hook board or tray, the جاکلیدی, fixed to the wall right beside the front door. Guests removing their shoes at the entrance will often see it at eye level. Decorative versions made from carved wood, ceramic, or metalwork are popular as housewarming gifts, and vendors in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar stock them alongside other small household items.
