What it means
درمانگر (darmângar) means therapist or healer. The word is a native Persian compound: درمان (darmân) means treatment or remedy, a word inherited from Middle Persian, and the suffix گر (gar) marks the person who performs an action. Together they form the one who heals. In everyday Persian, درمانگر covers licensed psychotherapists, physical therapists, and traditional healers depending on context. A close synonym in formal medical settings is روانپزشک (ravânpezeshk) for psychiatrist or روانشناس (ravânshenâs) for psychologist, though درمانگر is broader and less clinical.
How to use it
- من یه درمانگر خوب پیدا کردم. (man ye darmângar-e khoob peydâ kardam) “I found a good therapist.”
- درمانگرم گفت باید استراحت کنم. (darmângar-am goft bâyad esterâhat konam) “My therapist said I need to rest.”
- اون درمانگر خیلی با تجربهست. (oon darmângar kheyli bâ tajrobe-st) “That therapist is very experienced.”
- درمانگرهای سنتی هنوز تو روستاها هستن. (darmângar-hâye sonnati hanuz tu rustâhâ hastan) “Traditional healers still exist in the villages.”
Cultural note
In Iran, mental health services have expanded significantly over the past two decades, and the word درمانگر has become more common as therapy becomes less stigmatized in urban areas. Traditional medicine, including herbalists and spiritual healers, remains present especially in rural communities, and درمانگر can describe them as well. The term carries a warmer, more personal tone than the clinical روانپزشک.
