What it means
چکمه (chokmeh) is the Persian word for a tall boot, one that covers the calf and sometimes reaches the knee. The word was borrowed from Chagatai Turkic çäkmä and Azerbaijani çəkmə and has been part of everyday Persian for several centuries. It displaced the older native Persian word موزه (muze) in most western dialects. The contrast to know is that چکمه is tall, while نیمبوت (nim-but) is a shorter ankle boot.

Cultural note
Tall leather boots have been part of Iranian equestrian and military dress for centuries, influenced by the nomadic Turkic and Mongol cultures that shaped much of the region’s clothing vocabulary. The word چکمه itself reflects this history, arriving in Persian through the Turkic languages that dominated Central Asia and parts of Iran under Timurid and later Safavid and Qajar courts. Today چکمه refers equally to riding boots, rain boots, and fashion boots in everyday speech.
