What it means
نیمبوت (nim-but) literally means half-boot and refers to an ankle boot, a shoe that covers the foot and ankle but does not extend up the calf. The word is a compound: نیم (nim) is a native Persian prefix meaning half or semi, while بوت (but) is borrowed from European languages (English boot or French botte). This contrasts directly with چکمه (chokmeh), which is a tall boot reaching the knee or higher. You may also hear نیمچکمه used with the same meaning in some regions.
How to use it
- نیمبوت چرم خریدم. (nim-but-e charm kharidAM.) “I bought leather ankle boots.”
- نیمبوت راحتتر از چکمهست. (nim-but râhat-tar az chokmeh-e.) “Ankle boots are more comfortable than tall boots.”
- این نیمبوت با شلوار جین خوب میاد. (in nim-but bâ shalvâr-e jin khub miyâd.) “These ankle boots go well with jeans.”
- پاشنه نیمبوتم شکسته. (pâshne-ye nim-butam shekaste.) “The heel of my ankle boot is broken.”
Cultural note
Ankle boots became popular in Iran alongside the global spread of Western casual fashion, particularly from the 1990s onward. They are a staple of urban women’s fashion in Tehran and other large cities, worn across three seasons. The term نیمبوت is widely understood in standard Persian, though some speakers prefer the equivalent نیمچکمه, which uses the older Turkic-origin word for boot instead of the European borrowing.
