What it means
چادر زدن (châdar zadan) literally means to strike or place a tent, and is the standard everyday phrase for pitching a tent or making camp. چادر (châdar) comes from Middle Persian, where it originally meant a large sheet or covering, and زدن (zadan) is a native Persian verb meaning to strike or to do. In this compound, زدن functions as a light verb giving the action its verbal force. چادر on its own also refers to the full-body covering worn by some Iranian women, but in a camping context the tent meaning is unambiguous.

Camping (اردو زدن or چادر زدن) has grown significantly as a leisure activity in Iran over the past two decades, particularly among younger Iranians and families. Popular destinations include the forests of Gilan and Mazandaran in the north, the deserts of Yazd and Dasht-e Kavir, and the riversides of the Zagros region. The word چادر for tent distinguishes the canvas shelter clearly from a خیمه (khime), a more formal or ceremonial tent.
