What it means
بیتفاوت (bi-tafâvot) is a hybrid compound: the Persian prefix بی (bi-, without) attached to the Arabic noun تفاوت (tafâvot, difference or distinction). Literally it means without difference, and it describes someone to whom outcomes make no difference at all: indifferent, apathetic, unmoved. The formation is typical of literary Persian, which regularly grafts the bi- prefix onto Arabic nouns to create negative adjectives. It is neutral in register and appears in both newspapers and ordinary conversation. A synonym with a more emotional, slightly more negative charge is بیاعتنا (bi-e’tenâ, heedless, dismissive), while سرد (sard, cold) can describe the same emotional distance in a more colloquial way.

- نسبت به اتفاقات اطرافش کاملاً بیتفاوته. (Nesbat be ettefâghât-e atrafash kâmelan bi-tafâvote.) “He is completely indifferent to what is happening around him.”
- چرا انقدر بیتفاوتی؟ (Cherâ inghadr bi-tafâvoti?) “Why are you so apathetic?”
- بیتفاوتی مردم نسبت به محیط زیست نگرانکنندهست. (Bi-tafâvoti-ye mardom nesbat be mohit-e zist negarân-konande-st.) “People’s indifference toward the environment is worrying.”
- با یه لحن بیتفاوت جواب داد. (Bâ ye lahn-e bi-tafâvot javâb dâd.) “She answered in an indifferent tone.”
Cultural note
بیتفاوتی (bi-tafâvoti, indifference as a noun) has become a recurring theme in Iranian social commentary, particularly in discussions about civic engagement and public apathy. Sociologists, journalists, and public intellectuals use it to describe a cultural withdrawal that many attribute to decades of political frustration. The word therefore carries not only a personal emotional meaning but also a social and political weight that makes it more loaded in Iranian public discourse than a simple translation into English might suggest.
