What it means

عسل (asal) is the standard Persian word for honey. It is a loanword from Arabic, built on the triliteral root ع-س-ل, and has fully replaced the older native Persian word انگبین (angebin) in everyday speech. Note that شهد (shahd), often listed alongside انگبین, is a native Persian word for honey or nectar (from Middle Persian shahd); both انگبین and شهد are Persian, in contrast to the Arabic loanword عسل. Those older forms still appear in poetry and formal writing, but عسل is what you will hear at the breakfast table, in the bazaar, and in any conversation about food or medicine. The word carries connotations of sweetness, nourishment, and natural goodness.
