What it means
آپدیت (âpdayt) is a direct phonetic borrowing of the English word “update,” used in Persian to mean a software update, a new version of an app or operating system, or the act of updating something. It functions as both a noun and a verb in colloquial speech: you can have an آپدیت (a pending update) or آپدیت کردن (âpdayt kardan, to update something). The more formal Persian equivalent is بهروزرسانی (be-ruz-resâni), meaning “bringing up to date,” but in casual conversation almost everyone says آپدیت. The word entered Persian rapidly with smartphone adoption after 2010.

- یه آپدیت جدید اومده، نصبش کن. (ye âpdayt-e jadid umade, nasbesh kon.) “A new update has come out, install it.”
- اپلیکیشن آپدیت نمیشه، اینترنتتو چک کن. (aplikeyshan âpdayt nemishe, internet-o chek kon.) “The app won’t update, check your internet.”
- آپدیت اتوماتیک رو خاموش کردم چون حجم میخوره. (âpdayt-e otomâtik ro khâmush kardam chon hejm mikhore.) “I turned off auto-update because it uses data.”
Cultural note
In Iran, software updates carry an extra layer of practical significance because VPNs and filtered networks often interfere with automatic update mechanisms. Many users deliberately delay updates or disable them to conserve mobile data, since international traffic routed through VPNs is slower and more expensive. This means آپدیت is a word that comes up frequently in conversations about both tech features and the everyday frustration of living with an internet that does not behave like it does abroad.
