What it means
آنفولانزا (ânfolânzâ) is Persian for flu or influenza. The word entered Persian from Italian influenza through French, following the path most European medical terms took into Persian during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Italian influenza literally meant influence or influx, referring originally to the supposed influence of celestial bodies on epidemic disease. In Iranian Persian, آنفولانزا is used in both clinical settings and casual conversation to distinguish the flu from a common cold (سرماخوردگی). Doctors and patients use the same word, so there is no formal-informal gap for this term.

- آنفولانزا گرفتم، تب و لرز دارم. (Ânfolânzâ gereftam, tab va larz dâram.) “I got the flu, I have fever and chills.”
- واکسن آنفولانزا زدی امسال؟ (Vâksan-e ânfolânzâ zadi emsâl?) “Did you get the flu vaccine this year?”
- آنفولانزا خیلی بدتر از سرماخوردگیه. (Ânfolânzâ kheyli badtar az sarmâkhordagiye.) “The flu is much worse than a common cold.”
- اون آنفولانزا داره، بهش نزدیک نشو. (Un ânfolânzâ dâre, behesh nazdik nasho.) “He has the flu, do not get close to him.”
Cultural note
Seasonal flu waves are taken seriously across Iran, and pharmacies stock antiviral medications and flu remedies visibly. The annual flu vaccine is available in Iranian health centers at low or no cost through the public health system, though uptake varies by region and age group. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Iranians became highly aware of the distinction between آنفولانزا and کرونا (COVID-19), as early symptoms overlap. Persian social media and public health messaging leaned heavily on this contrast during 2020 and 2021.
