What it means

آگاهی (âgâhi) is formed from the pure Persian adjective آگاه (âgâh, aware, informed) plus the abstract noun suffix -i, making it the state of being aware or informed. It covers awareness of a situation, consciousness in the philosophical sense, and public information or notification. The verb آگاه بودن (âgâh budan) means to be aware, and آگاه شدن (âgâh shodan) means to become aware or to be notified. A close synonym is شعور (sho’ur), but آگاهی is more neutral and does not carry the social-propriety connotation that شعور does. In formal and journalistic Persian, آگاهی is also used for public announcements or notices.

How to use it

  • آگاهی از حقوق خودت مهمه. (âgâhi az hoghugh-e khodat mohemme.) “Awareness of your rights is important.”
  • مردم باید آگاهی بیشتری داشته باشن. (mardom bâyad âgâhi bishtari dâshte bâshan.) “People need to have greater awareness.”
  • آگاهی به خودی خود قدرته. (âgâhi be khodi khod ghodrate.) “Awareness itself is power.”
  • از این موضوع آگاهی نداشتم. (az in mowzu âgâhi nadâshtam.) “I was not aware of this matter.”

Cultural note

آگاهی carries political and social weight in modern Iran and in the Iranian diaspora. During periods of social movement and reform, the slogan of raising public آگاهی (awareness) has been central to activist discourse. The word also names the criminal investigation department of the Iranian police, Agâhi, known colloquially for handling missing persons and crime. In Sufi and philosophical literature, آگاهی edges toward the meaning of enlightened self-awareness.
