What it means
زندایی (zan-dâyi) means the wife of your dâyi, your maternal uncle, the brother of your mother. It is a colloquial compound of zan (woman, wife, pure Persian) and dâyi (maternal uncle, of Iranian origin). Persian family vocabulary separates maternal relatives (dâyi for maternal uncle, khâle for maternal aunt) from paternal ones (amu for paternal uncle, amme for paternal aunt), and the same separation carries over to their spouses. There is no single English equivalent since English uses aunt for all wives of uncles regardless of which side of the family they come from.
How to use it
- زنداییم امسال به عروسی دعوتم کرد. (Zan-dâyim emsâl be arusi da’vatam kard.) “My maternal uncle’s wife invited me to a wedding this year.”
- زنداییت کجاست؟ (Zan-dâyit kojâst?) “Where is your maternal uncle’s wife?”
- زنداییم آشپز خوبیه. (Zan-dâyim âshpaz-e khubi-ye.) “My maternal uncle’s wife is a good cook.”
- با زنداییم رفتیم خرید. (Bâ zan-dâyim raftim kharid.) “I went shopping with my maternal uncle’s wife.”
Cultural note
In Iranian family culture, maternal relatives (dâyi, khâle and their families) are often felt to be emotionally closer than paternal ones, partly because mothers tend to maintain stronger ties with their own families of origin. The wife of the dâyi is part of these maternal gatherings and is typically addressed directly by her first name or as زندایی by younger relatives as a respectful but warm form of address.
