What it means
یواسبی (yu-es-bi) is the Persian phonetic spelling of the English acronym USB, which stands for Universal Serial Bus. It entered Persian tech vocabulary in the late 1990s alongside the global rollout of the USB standard and is now used without any alternative. Iranians use یواسبی to refer to the physical port on a device, the connector on a cable, or the flash drive itself (often called فلش یواسبی, flash-e yu-es-bi, or simply فلش, flash). There is no Persian coined equivalent in common use: the Academy of Persian Language has not produced a widely adopted native term for USB, and speakers across all age groups default to the English acronym.

In Iran, the USB flash drive became the primary medium for sharing media, software, and files during the 2000s and 2010s, when internet speeds were slow and access to content was restricted. The practice of exchanging فلشها (flash drives) loaded with films, music, and books created a distinct informal distribution culture that predates streaming. Even as internet infrastructure has improved, یواسبی remains in daily use, and many Iranian computers and televisions still feature prominent USB ports specifically marketed for media playback. The word is pronounced as three distinct letters in speech, exactly mirroring how English speakers say “U-S-B.”
