What it means
یادگاری (yâdegâri) is built from the native Persian root یاد (yâd), meaning memory or remembrance, combined with the suffix -gâri, forming a word that means a keepsake, memento, or anything kept to preserve the memory of a person, place, or event. Unlike سوغات (soghât), which is a gift a traveler brings back to give to others, یادگاری is something kept by the person themselves as a personal memory. A small ceramic tile bought at a bazaar in Kashan and kept on your shelf at home is a یادگاری. The word also functions as an adjective: عکس یادگاری (ax-e yâdegâri) means a commemorative or souvenir photograph.

Cultural note
یادگاری carries a deeper emotional weight than a simple souvenir purchase. In Persian culture, objects passed down through generations, a grandmother’s ring, a father’s pen, a pressed flower from a special trip, are described as یادگاری and treated with care. The phrase به یادگاری (be yâdegâri) means “as a keepsake” and is used when someone gives something with the explicit intention that it be remembered by. At tourist sites across Iran, vendors sell items labeled یادگاری, though shoppers distinguish between mass-produced tourist goods and objects with genuine personal meaning.
